Your hosts Karla and Harold first met in 1992, in Manzanillo, a charming fishing village in Limón, Costa Rica, nestled in the Southern Caribbean. At the time, Karla was promoted to be the resident Parataxonomist of the Gandoca Manzanillo Mixed Wildlife Refuge while working for INBio, a scientific institute responsible for the national inventory of species such as insects, plants, and freshwater mollusks. During her stay and while collecting data on species, she crossed paths with Harold, known as Taku in his town. Taku, originally from Changuinola, Panama, was raised in Manzanillo. As a young man from the area, he and his closest friends formed a strong connection with the young Parataxonomist, leading to a friendship that endured for many years.
After more than two decades, Karla and Taku reunited, each with their own past, ready to embark on a new chapter together. Karla had been involved in tourism for over 25 years with the vision of an entrepreneur, while Taku, after residing in San Francisco, California for a little over twenty years, returned to his childhood town, where his maternal family resides, now calling it home.

Our Manatee Tour is a unique opportunity to encounter these gentle giants in their natural habitat. Your journey begins as we collect you after crossing the Costa Rican border, venturing through lush banana plantations en route to the riverside where the manatees reside.
Upon arrival, you'll be immersed in the fascinating world of manatees with a comprehensive lecture and captivating videos, providing insight into their behavior and the conservation efforts in place to protect them.
Next, we'll explore the scenic river, teeming with diverse wildlife such as birds, sloths, monkeys, and lush vegetation. Our destination is the manatee observation platform, where you'll have the rare chance to witness these majestic creatures in action. As you quietly observe, you'll see the manatees emerge to feed on leaves and bananas, their heads and chests visible beneath the water's surface.
After this awe-inspiring experience, our boat will ferry you to a nearby beach, where you can explore facilities dedicated to the conservation of sea turtles, amidst a backdrop of abundant iguanas.
For your return journey, you'll travel by taxi and boat to the town of Bocas, reflecting on the unforgettable memories made during your Manatee Tour.
Please note that silence is essential during manatee observation to avoid disturbing these sensitive creatures.

During the night, take the boat to discover the incredible bioluminescence made by plankton. During 2h, you will see how they react to light and movement in the water in 3 different spots to discover the 2 types of bioluminescent planktons. Part of the tour is snorkeling in the middle of the bioluminescence, a lifetime experience!
Schedule: 8pm to 10pm only during the dark nights. Schedule and calendar depend on the moon, ask us to know the possibilities!
